In many cases, yes, according to a recent study by the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication. It found that 22 percent of Internet users have canceled a print subscription because they could get the same product online. [More...]

Weeks before the CDC and WHO alerted the public to a growing number of swine flu cases, a startup based in Seattle's suburbs already had a hunch something was up. Veratect, a 2-year-old company with fewer than 50 employees, combines computer algorithms with human analysts to monitor online and offline sources for hints of disease outbreaks and civil unrest worldwide. In the midst of the first-quarter earnings reports season, investors are beginning to look at the effects of some spectacular price cuts for prepaid cell phone service. That's a change from recent years, when flashy new phones and data services hogged the spotlight. This year, the developments have been more appropriate for a recession. [More...]

"HI TWITTERS. THANK YOU FOR A WARM WELCOME. FEELING REALLY 21st CENTURY." So read Oprah Winfrey's first tweet last Friday. Given Twitter's wild success, the addition of one more devotee ordinarily would not create much of an impact -- even a celebrity like Winfrey. However, Winfrey made her Twitter debut on her TV show. [More...]

I was in Malta last week at the IFA 2009 conference, which is partially intended to drive interest into Malta as a technology center. This is one of the locations where people believe a new Silicon Valley might be born, and that certainly focuses us on the fact that the current Silicon Valley isn't what it once was. [More...]
